Adjusted Right Aileron, Enlarged Rudder Trim

Previous - Index - Next

This morning, I looked closely at the way the ailerons were sitting in trail relative to the wings. It appeared to me that the outboard end of the right aileron was sitting higher relative to the wing than the inboard end of the right aileron and both ends of the left aileron. I removed the right aileron from the wing and then took off the outboard aileron bracket. I then enlarged the bolt holes slightly (~3/64") in the downward direction and then reattached the bracket with the bolts in the lower position.

The result of this was the outboard end of the aileron sitting lower relative to the wing than it had before. My reading had led me to believe that this could help to fix the heavy wing. I still thought I would likely have to make an additional adjustment after flying it.

It was getting windy, but the wind was right down 33, so I went out and did a single circuit in the pattern. It appeared during this one test flight that the heavy wing has been completely resolved. The plane also flew coordinated with my hands off. Admittedly, this was a single flight in the pattern with a maximum IAS of ~120 knots, but it's still a good sign.

I will fly it again before I decide that no further adjustment will be needed.
